Situated
in Preston, in the northern suburbs,
Melbourne Lodge is a quality high standard 50-bed
crisis accommodation facility for single women, as well as for
women with children.
Melbourne Lodge is privately run and does not receive
government funding.
The idea of establishing a crisis accommodation
facility for women and children only in Melbourne's northern suburbs
emanated from Harlan
Personalised Transport Services Managing Director, Harrison
Jorre, and his Sales and Marketing Manager, Greg
Conrick.
They consulted local welfare agencies who enthusiastically
welcomed the project. It was an idea that had been circulating for
some years. Now at last it had become a reality. John
Ferwerda, a Social Worker, was appointed on-site Manager, and
Melbourne Lodge opened on 5 December 2005.
"Serving You with Care" is a motto that Harrison Jorre
has employed in his business dealings spanning some 30 years. The
same approach has been adopted at Melbourne Lodge.
In its first 3 months of operation, Melbourne Lodge
received referrals from 26 agencies for 65 single women, as well
as for 19 women with 35 children. These referrals, incidentally,
came not only from agencies in metopolitan Melbourne, but also from
rural areas.
It should be noted that of the referrals made to Melbourne Lodge
to date, a significant proportion (approximately 80%) have been
directly related to domestic violence. In addition, the remaining
proportion (approximately 20%) represents those who could well be
classified as chronically homeless.
